MRD Coatings for Military and Commercial Use

Historically, AccuCoat Mini Red Dot Coatings were provided to the military on glass substrates for optimal durability and performance. More recently, designs have been transitioned to plastic optics with the same MIL-Spec features, reducing weight and cost. Due to the rise in popularity of the product on the commercial market today, AccuCoat offers custom design support and optional VIS-NIR coatings with on-time delivery for high-performance and commercial options.

“The challenge was spurred by a request to convert the glass optic performance and durability against jet fuel, insect repellent, and humidity to plastic optics. We developed an option that was the only one that fully passed the customer’s testing barrage,” stated Paul Meier-Wang, President.

AccuCoat provides coatings for 575nm or 650nm red LEDs, but MRD coatings can be created and optimized for any visible range with high transmission. An AR coating is placed on the opposite side to prevent ghost imaging of the dot when at eye level.

“We optimize the color in transmission, which is constrained by the LED and is close to neutral. The transmission can be optimized for any need. We have also developed coatings that do not interfere with IR detectors when needed for IR night functionality. Optics that do not transmit blue or green tints can indicate an entry-level optic.”

With competition use and home protection on the rise, AccuCoat can coat at volume for the MRD commercial market on either glass or plastic optics with custom adjustments for performance level and durability needs. With over 20 years of experience and problem-solving technology, our highly trained coating team is ready to alleviate your performance frustration, bump up run volumes, and extend optic performance needs.

Mirror Coatings From AccuCoat

Our customized metal coatings can be applied as Bare, Protected or Enhanced with dielectric layers. We also produce Dielectric mirror coatings (High Reflector) for >99% reflectivity. All of these types of reflective coatings can be applied to Glass, Molded and Diamond-turned Plastic, or Metal substrates.

Many of these coatings have been tested to meet Military Specifications, ISO Standards, and High Laser Damage Threshold tests (LDT) and are finding their way into many new Solar applications.

We have the capability to coat polygons and spinners for laser scanning or LiDAR reflector applications in high volumes with our optical coating technology. Such common coatings for these applications include Enhanced Aluminum and Protected Gold Coatings.

Available Types: Aluminum mirror coating (Al), Gold coatings (Au), Silver coatings (Ag), Chrome coating (Cr), Dark Chrome coating, Copper coating (Cu), as well as Inconel, Nickel (Ni), Titanium (Ti), and All Dielectric coating.

MRD Coatings

With the increase in demand for rifle and handgun accessories, AccuCoat was quick to react to the large demand for the coatings required on these sight optics. MRD optics are an in-between option for laser sights and old-fashioned iron peep sights to place a dot or “x” on the intended target. Used for consumer and military applications, this is currently a large market space for optics providers.

AccuCoat has a long history of supplying coatings for these MRD’s. Many years ago we were approached by a military supplier looking to switch from glass to plastic optics and still meet the harsh demands on this product. AccuCoat coated prototypes which were then subjected to (and passed) a long list of Mil-Spec requirements including antifreeze and rifle-bore cleaning compound.

Recently a commercial MRD lens manufacturer came to us for help, as their current coating design was creating poor product performance. AccuCoat was able to redesign the coatings, coat prototypes and exceed the optical performance the end-customer was demanding.

With the ability to meet a very high monthly coating volume, AccuCoat is able to keep up with production demands for well-known sight manufacturers across the USA.
